  閱讀理解

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to link the brain with computers. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.

Recently, two researchers, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytechnic school in Lausanne, Switzerland, demonstrated(展示)a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.

In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand and. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.

“ Our brain has billions of nerve ceils. These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓)to the muscles to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the muscles,” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with external world and also to control devices.”

The researchers designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(頭皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer interprets the signals and commands the motorized wheelchair. The wheelchair also has two cameras that identify objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.

Prof. Millan, the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that interprets brain signals and turns them into simple commands. “The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two categories: communication, and controlling devices. One example is this wheelchair.”

He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can benefit from. And the other is to guarantee that they can use the technology over long periods of time.

  A. scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair

  B. computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair

  C. scalp→cap→computer→wheelchair

Among professional basketball players, Jeremy Lin’s background is not typical. He graduated from Harvard University, which sends few players to the NBA, and he is the only Chinese-American NBA player. But when you watch him on the court, there is no doubt that he belongs there. He moves with speed and grace that demonstrate years of faithful practice, which is fueled by a love for basketball.

Lin’s enjoyment to basketball actually began in Taiwan. When Lin’s father moved to U.S.,his interest in the sport only grew and he passed on this love of baskeball to his son, introducing him to the game at the age of five. The young Lin spent much of his youth playing basketball for fun.

In high school, Lin dreamed of playing in the NBA.When he applied for college,he was not offered a single sports scholarship. However, after his admission to Harvard ,he was offered a place on its college basketball team.

During Lin’s time at Harvard, his basketball career began to speed up. He scored 1,482 points, making him one of the highest scorers in Ivy League history.

When he graduated, no professional teams offered Lin a contract, but he was invited to play in the NBA Summer League. He played well and ended up eagerly singning a contract with the Golden State Warriors.

At first, playing in professional games filled Lin with excitement. He treasured opportunities to meet players he had been watching on TV for years. But slowly, the excitement wore off and was replaced by anxiety. In a few very difficult months, he was cut by two teams before the New York Knicks picked him up.

But he had the courage and determination to stick to his dream, so he put himself into hard training to get ready for his opportunity to come, Then his moment arrived on February4, 2024,on which his excellent performance made him famous overnight. Aftet that, he led the Knicks to their fifth straight victory.

  閱讀理解

Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized(把…歸類) as "honor" help you create this life of good feelings.

Here's an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.

Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk's mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky(卑鄙的) excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.

Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?

In the first case, where we don't tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate(演示) that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk's attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased.

Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility(高尚).

There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it's easy to think and act honorably again when we're happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it's started, it's easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

16 According to the passage, the positive action in the example contributes to our_______.

  A. self-respect

  B. financial rewards

  C. advertising ability

  D. friendly relationship

  17. The author thinks that keeping silent about the uncharged item is equal to_______.

  A. lying

  B. stealing

  C. cheating

  D. advertising

  18. The underlined phrase "bringing the error to the clerk's attention" means_______.

  A. telling the truth to the clerk

  B. offering advice to the clerk

  C. asking the clerk to be more attentive

  D. reminding the clerk of the charged item

  19. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?

  A. We'll be very excited.

  B. We'll feel unfortunate.

  C. We'll have a sense of honor.

  D. We'll feel sorry for the clerk.

  20. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?

  A. How to Live Truthfully

  B. Importance of Peacefulness

  C. Ways of Gaining Self-respect

  D. Happiness through Honorable Actions
