Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress indicates a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead to a better life and a brtter way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward

by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things.

However,at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to.The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effect to visit one another personally.A personal visit carries with it the additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off.

With efficiency also comes mass production. Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handcrafts(手工藝品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.

Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old.

It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created.

  4. According to Paragraph 1, progress can benefit people when they are willing to _______.

With around 100 students scheduled to be in that 9 am Monday morning lecture, it is no surprise that almost 20 people actually make it to the class and only 10 of them arc still awake after the first 15 minutes; it is not even a surprise that most of them are still in their pyjamas (睡衣). Obviously, students are terrible at adjusting their sleep cycles to their daily schedule.

All human beings possess a body clock. Along with other alerting (警報) systems, this governs the sleep/wake cycle and is therefore one of the main processes which govern sleep behaviour. Typically, the preferred sleep/wake cycle is delayed in adolescents, which leads to many students not feeling sleepy until much later in the evenings. This typical sleep pattern is usually referred to as the "night owl" schedule of sleep.

This is opposed to the "early bird" schedule, and is a kind of disorder where the individual tends to stay up much past midnight. Such a person has great difficulty in waking up in the mornings. Research suggests that night owls feel most alert and function best in the evenings and at night. Research findings have shown that about 20 percent of people can be classified as "night owls" and only 10 percent can be classified as "early birds" --- the other 70 percent are in the middle. Although this is clearly not true for all students, for the ones who are true night owls this gives them an excellent excuse for missing their lectures which unfortunately fall before midday.

  10. What docs the author stress in Paragraph I?

  A. Many students are absent from class.

  B. Students are very tired on Monday mornings.

  C. Students do not adjust their sleep patterns well.

  D. Students are not well prepared for class on Mondays.

  11. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2?

  A. Most students prefer to get up late in the morning.

  B. Students don't sleep well because of alerting systems.

  C. One's body clock governs the sleep/wake cycle independently.

  D. Adolescents' delayed sleep/wake cycle isn't the preferred pattern.

  12. What does the text mainly talk about?

  A. Functions of the body clock.

  B. The "night owl" phenomenon.

  C. Human beings' sleep behaviour.

  D. The school schedule of "early birds".

  D

Women are friendly. But men are more competitive. Why? Researchers have found it's all down to the hormone oxytocin (荷爾蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently.

"Women tend to be social in their behavior. They often share with others. But men tend to be competitive. They are trying to improve their social status," said Professor Ryan.

Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it during positive social interactions (互動) such as falling in love or giving birth.

But in a previous experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during negative social interactions such as envy.

Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relationships, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship.

Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37. Half of the participants(參與者)received oxytocin. The other half received placebo (安慰劑).

After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same procedure with the other material.

Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social interactions. Then they were asked to analyze the relationships by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions.

The results indicated that, after treatment with oxytocin, men's ability to correctly recognize competitive relationships improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.

Professor Ryan thus concluded: "Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better distinguish different social interactions. And the behavior differences between men and women are caused by biological factors (因素) that are mainly hormonal."

  13. What can we learn from Professor Ryan's previous experiment?

  A. Oxytocin affects our behavior in a different way.

  B. Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love.

  C. Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others' success.

  D. Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behavior differences.

  14. Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment?

  A. To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social interactions.

  B. To know the differences between friendship and competition.

  C. To know people's different abilities to answer questions.

  D. To test people's understanding of body language.

  15. The author develops the text by______.

  A. explaining people's behaviors

  B. describing his own experiences

  C. distinguishing sexual differences

  D. discussing research experiments

Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? ___16____. Yet a very young child – or even an animal, such as a pigeon , can learn to recognize faces. We all take this for granted.

___17____. When we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels that make that individual different from others.

Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. ____18____. But if you were asked to describe a “nice person”, you might begin to think about someone who was kind, considerate, friendly, warm, and so forth.

There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels and acts. Gordon Airport, an American psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English words characterizing differences in people’s behavior. __19___. Bookworms, conservatives, military types – people are described with such terms.

People have always tried to “type” each other. Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the villain’s or the hero’s role. In fact, the words “person” and “personality” come from the Latin persona, meaning “mask”. Today, most television and movie actors do not wear masks. ____20____ .

  A. If you were asked to describe what a “nice face” look like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so.

  B. But we can easily tell the “good guys” from the “bad guys” because the two types differ in appearance as well as in actions.

  C. We also tell people apart by how they behave.

  D. People have difficulty in describing the features of fingerprints.

  E. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing, or typing one`s personality.

  F. Experts say that actors differ in their behavioral and physical characteristics in acting.

  G. Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another.
