A famous doctor once received a little child who was badly ill. Thanks to his skill and care, his young patient got well and was soon able to get up and run about again.

The child’s mother was very much obliged to the doctor, and she called on him to thank him for what he had done for her child. “Doctor,” she said, “you have saved my little son. I don’t know how to thank you enough. I feel that money alone cannot repay you, so I have made this little purse with my own hands, as a sign of my gratitude. I hope you will accept it.” The doctor stood up and said coldly, “Madam, a little present like that is very nice between friends, but a doctor needs to be paid properly for what he has done.” The lady was so surprised and hurt so much that she could not reply for a moment. Then she said quietly, “Perhaps you will tell me how much your fee is?” “Fifty pounds”, he answered. The lady opened the little purse and took out four fifty-pound bank notes. She handed one of them to the doctor, and put the other three back into the purse. She put the purse into her handbag and, saying good bye to the doctor, went out of the room.

Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately:the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure(暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but

two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke(中風)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants(污染物) were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure. A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency (EPA)considers to be of “moderate”(良好) quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of

pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.

53.The text mainly discusses the relationship between________.

  A.heart problems and air quality

  B.heart problems and exercising

  C.heart problems and smoking

  D.heart problems and fatty food

  54.

The underlined word“modest”in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.

  A.relatively high

  B.extremely low

  C.relatively low

  D.extremely high

55.What can we learn from the text?

A.Eating fatty food has immediate effects on your heart.

B.The EPA conducted many studies on air quality.

C.Moderate air quality is more harmful than smoking.

D.Stricter regulations on pollutants should be made.

56.The author's purpose of writing the text is most likely to________.

  A.inform

  B.persuade

  C.describe

  D.entertain

  Wilderness

“In wilderness (荒野) is the preservation of the world.” This is a famous saying from a writer regarded as one of the fathers of environmentalism. The frequency with which it is borrowed mirrors a heated debate on environmental protection: whether to place wilderness at the heart of what is to be preserved.

As John Sauven of Greenpeace UK points out, there is a strong appeal in images of the wild, the untouched; more than anything else, they speak of the nature that many people value most dearly. The urge to leave the subject of such images untouched is strong, and the danger exploitation(開發)brings to such landscapes(景觀)is real. Some of these wildernesses also perform functions that humans need—the rainforests, for example, store carbon in vast quantities. To Mr. Sauven, these “ecosystem services” far outweigh the gains from exploitation.

Lee Lane, a visiting fellow at the Hudson Institute, takes the opposing view. He acknowledges that wildernesses do provide useful services, such as water conservation. But that is not, he argues, a reason to avoid all human presence, or indeed commercial and industrial exploitation. There are ever more people on the Earth, and they reasonably and rightfully want to have better lives, rather than merely struggle for survival. While the ways of using resources have improved, there is still a growing need

for raw materials, and some wildernesses contain them in abundance. If they can be tapped without reducing the services those wildernesses provide, the argument goes, there is no further reason not to do so. Being untouched is not, in itself, a characteristic worth valuing above all others.

I look forward to seeing these views taken further, and to their being challenged by the other participants. One challenge that suggests itself to me is that both cases need to take on the question of spiritual value a little more directly. And there is a practical question as to whether wildernesses can be exploited without harm.

This is a topic that calls for not only free expression of feelings, but also the guidance of reason. What position wilderness should enjoy in the preservation of the world obviously deserves much more serious thinking.

  67.John Sauven holds that ________.

A.many people value nature too much

  B.exploitation of wildernesses is harmful

  C.wildernesses provide humans with necessities

D.the urge to develop the ecosystem services is strong

68.What is the main idea of Para.3?

A.The exploitation is necessary for the poor people.

B.Wildernesses cannot guarantee better use of raw materials.

C.Useful services of wildernesses are not the reason for no exploitation.

D.All the characteristics concerning the exploitation should be treated equally.

69.What is the author's attitude towards this debate?

  A.Objective.

  B.Disapproving.

  C.Sceptical.

  D.Optimistic.

70.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

  CP:Central Point P:Point Sp:Sub-point(次要點)

  C:Conclusion

作者在第二段中主要論述不應該開發荒野的觀點,并通過John Sauven 的視角“and the danger exploitation(開發) brings to such landscapes(景觀) is real.”

作者在第三段主要論述可以開發荒野的觀點,并通過Lee Lane 的視角“But that is not, he argues, a reason to avoid all human presence, or indeed commercial and industrial exploitation.”

(2011·寧德質檢,A)The Golden Gate Bridge, the first sight for many people arriving in the United States by ship, is a well-recognized landmark, which spans(橫跨) the Golden Gate Strait.

The idea for a bridge across the strait had been around for many years, but it was not easy to get the project started. The construction of the bridge finally began in 1933. The construction work set new standards for safety—workers were among the first required to wear hard hats, and an innovative(革新的) safety net saved the lives of nineteen men while the bridge was built. The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, which was finished ahead of schedule.

Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer in charge of the bridge project. However, he had little experience with the construction of suspension(懸浮)bridges. For this reason, other engineers, architects, and designers made great contributions to the design and construction of the bridge. For example, the bridge owes its art style and unique orange color to the architects Irving and Gertrude Morrow. Charles Alton Ellis was the main engineer on the project and did much of the technical work necessary to build the bridge.

Today, the Golden Gate Bridge has a main span of 4,200 feet and a total length of 8,981 feet, making it one of the longest bridges in the world. The bridge is 90 feet wide, and its span is 220 feet above the water. The towers supporting the huge cables (巨纜) rise 746 feet above the waters of the Golden Gate Strait, making them 191 feet taller than the Washington Monument. About 40 million cars cross the bridge every year. There are foghorns(霧角)to let passing ships know where the bridge is, and aircraft beacons(信號燈)on the tops of the towers to stop planes from crashing into them.

1.The purpose of the passage is to ________.

  A. describe the construction work of the Golden Gate Bridge

  B. introduce the Golden Gate Bridge

  C. tell us the history of the Golden Gate Bridge

  D. introduce the engineers in charge of the Golden Gate Bridge

2.Safety innovations during the construction of the bridge included ________.

  A. hard hats and a safety net B. aircraft beacons

  C. foghorns

  D. all of the above

答案:A。 由第二段第三句話“The construction work set new standards for safety—workers were among the first required to wear hard hats, and an innovative(革新的) safety net saved the lives of nineteen men while the bridge was built.”可知。

  3. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

  A. Joseph Strauss was skilled in the construction of suspension bridges

  B. it took the construction workers three years to build the Golden Gate Bridge

  C. about 100 thousand cars cross the Golden Gate Bridge every day

  D. the Golden Gate Bridge is the longest bridge in the world

由最后一段第四句話“About 40 million cars cross the bridge every year.”

  4. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.

  A. towers

  B. cables

  C. waters

  D. bridges

  答案:A。 所以them指代前面的“the towers”。
